The IdeaPad Y650 is a multimedia notebook from Lenovo with a beautiful 16-inch screen, HDMI out, a giant touchpad with multi-touch controls, and enough power and storage to serve as your primary family PC. With a thin (almost MacBook-like) appearance and a starting price of $1,299, how does the Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 stand up against the competition? Keep reading and we’ll let you know.

Lenovo broke into the consumer laptop market with the IdeaPad Y510 and now ushers in a unique, attractive design that’s one of the top systems in its class with the 16-inch Y650. At $1,399, this machine lacks certain refinements that its pricier competitors have, such as screaming graphics performance and an edge-to-edge glass display, but it more than compensates with strong overall performance, thunderous speakers, and unique face-detection software.

Lenovo’s consumer-oriented IdeaPad line grows more impressive with each new model. The IdeaPad Y650 shares a little DNA with the more buttoned-down ThinkPad line but turns up the volume with its style. Combine that with a gorgeous 16-inch screen, good productivity and multimedia performance, and some cool features, and the Y650’s $1,399 price looks very enticing.

Lenovo makes and markets a large selection of PCs in the U.S. ranging from notebooks to desktops, workstations and servers. There are three lines of Lenovo notebooks: the ThinkPad, the IdeaPad and a budget line that doesn’t get its own name, just model numbers. The ThinkPad brand has enjoyed a long history and still has a strong foothold in the enterprise market, but Lenovo wanted to branch out into the consumer market.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 is a laptop looking for a niche. At first glance it has all the features of a fairly sexy desktop replacement: The 16-inch LCD screen, JBL speakers, and huge hard drive practically scream “media center notebook.” On top of all that, the fairly powerful processor and fast DDR3 memory can deal with just about any video content while handling other tasks, without a hitch.

Lenovo’s new IdeaPad Y650 hardly has a flaw. Its Apple-esque chassis is loaded with decent components and it even excels (gasp!) at video playback. The only real stumble is an obnoxious low-battery warning tone (we’ll get into how horrible that feature later). But let’s focus on the good stuff first.

Of all the 16-inch media centers—laptops with 16-inch widescreens—the Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 ($1,299 direct) is easily the least burdensome on your back. It’s an alternative for those who don’t want to spend the money or make the switch to an Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics) but salivate over its lightness. The Y650 is designed with mobility in mind when others (ahem, other Windows laptops) with similar screens are at least a pound heavier.

In a media-saturated online world, it’s no surprise that whole categories of laptops now seem made to appeal to the home streaming-video connoisseur. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y series, and the Y650 in particular, look tailor-made for those who want to watch TV and media on a big, bright screen with better-than-average audio, and a decor-friendly design to match.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 is a large, fairly capable and highly stylish multimedia notebook offering. The glossy 16-inch widescreen is impressively large, as is the multitouch capable touchpad. Throw in an Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz processor, 4GB RAM, a 320GB HDD, a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce G105M GPU and you’ve got yourself some respectable internals to go with the gorgeous externals. And did we mention the weight is only 5.6lbs, and felt like less?

The new Lenovo Ideapad Y650 is the latest launch by Lenovo in the consumer notebook market. It is a 16 inch notebook at an affordable price which offers a very nice hardware spec, a slim design and good looks. It has a very nice display and offers very good performance with great speakers. In this review, we check out the new Lenovo Ideapad Y650 and see how it stacks up against the other 16 inch notebooks in its range like the Dell XPS Studio 16, HP Pavilion HDX 16 etc.
