Toshiba Satellite E105 Review

As one of two notebooks launching Best Buy’s Blue Label program, the Toshiba E105-S1402 incorporates a number of features and design elements based on customer research by the big-box retailer. The $1,199 E105, with a backlit keyboard and Toshiba’s funky Fusion Finish, certainly looks different from other notebooks from the company. Although we don’t love the design or the feel of the keyboard, this notebook will meet the needs of consumers looking for a thin and light system with long battery life and good overall performance.

The Toshiba Satellite E105 is a new 14.1” notebook with a aluminum body sold exclusively through Best Buy. The design moves away from the current rounded styling of the new Toshiba models to a thinner design with squared off edges. With a starting price of $899 this model comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, Intel integrated graphics, FM tuner, and backlit keyboard. Read our review to find out how it compares to other Toshiba models and if you should consider it for your next notebook.

If the Toshiba Satellite E105 is any indication, the answer is yes. The 14.1-inch laptop costs just $1,099, yet offers a full selection of features, a two-year warranty, and 4 hours of battery life. The biggest caveat with the Satellite E105 applies to casual gamers only: the laptop’s integrated graphics, while sufficient for basic computing, won’t have enough oomph for even basic 3D games. If you like to unwind with a few rounds of a first-person shooter or other game, you’ll be better served by the 13.3-inch HP Pavilion dv3510nr, which also sports Best Buy’s Blue Label.

Toshiba’s Satellite E105-S1402 laptop does an extremely good job at providing solid performance and battery life. The stylish aluminum clad 14.1-inch laptop looks and feel better than most laptops with their plastic cases but the keyboard and cases exhibit too much flex making it feel a little less sturdy. Overall, it is a decent system for those that are concerned about performance and battery life but don’t need 3D graphics performance or many peripherals.

It has some nice feature points, the design is cohesive with modern minimalism, and the backlit keyboard is more than a welcomed addition. However, sometimes you need to think things through a bit instead of just throwing features on (or off) a laptop and consider it “what the public asked for…”. I feel like that with this model, as it stands it could have used a bit more thought. For the price, I can’t say that the feature set won’t be worth it to some, but there are quite a few laptops out there that have similar specifications (or better) and are only missing one or two of the feature points this carries – for far less.

The $1,099.99 Satellite E105-S1402 isn’t just any mass-produced laptop. It was mass-produced specifically for electronics retailer Best Buy based at least partly on customer feedback. According to Toshiba, Best Buy customers asked for a lighter, slimmer 14.1-inch notebook with improved battery life, a backlit keyboard, and a good warranty. On those points, the E105 delivers. But Toshiba overlooks some other key details, keeping it from getting our top recommendation.
